Meeker | Rio Blanco County

Meeker is a town a little off the beaten path with a hearty selection of real estate for sale. There are homes for sale in Meeker that are affordable and make for an ideal permanent residence. There are few second, or vacation, homes in Meeker. There are about 1,000 total living structures in Meekers. Most of the homes, townhomes and condos in Meeker are a primary residence occupied by a homeowner who lives and works in Meeker. There are residences of all shapes and sizes, from larger single-family homes to smaller homes with one or two bedrooms, and a few scattered condos.

Meeker is the county seat of Rio Blanco County and has a population of about 2,500 residents. The town is mostly an agricultural community, but there is a good-sized downtown core area where there are several older homes. Some have been remodeled. There are few new builds in the core. New builds are typically on the outskirts of town or in the mountains surrounding Meeker.

The town is somewhat isolated in the fertile valley of the White River. Meeker sits near the intersection of State Highway 64 and State Highway 13, on the north side of the White River and at the base of a ridge the locals call "China Wall."

The town has a vibrant history. President Teddy Roosevelt visited Meeker twice, in 1901 and 1905, to hunt mountain lions and bears. He stayed at the historic Hotel Meeker opposite the courthouse. Hunting, camping, fishing and bird watching are just a few of the outdoor adventures available during the summer. In the winter, the remote location is perfect for snowmobiling, snowshoeing/skinning, ice fishing and hunting.

In the core, Meeker's north-south streets are numbered east to west, from 1st Street to 13th Street. East-west streets include Market Street, which is the primary business district, along with Main Street one block to the north. The residential district is north of there, with homes on Park Avenue, Garfield Street, Cleveland Street, Hill Street, Cedar Street, Pinyon Street and Pine Street.

There is a second pocket of homes north on Sulphur Creek Road on the east side of town. Meeker Elementary School and Barone Middle School are on the east side of town, along with the Meeker Recreation Center. There are several newer upscale homes to the west of Sulphur Creek Road just past the recreation center, accessible via Shults Drive. There are wonderfully designed homes on Sanderson Drive and the attached side streets.

Even further north are homes west of Sulphur Creek Road via Sage Ridge Road. These homes are more remote but still only a few minutes from the downtown core. There are a few undeveloped lots here as well. Sage Hills Park provides a fun respite for residents in this area.

  • Sixth Street Park, on Sixth Street between Cedar Street and Hill Street, is a nice park in the neighborhood. The Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds is on the eastern edge of the downtown core, on Sulphur Creek Road.

  • Meeker is best known in canine circles for its annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials. The event presents five days of sheepdog herding that emphasizes education, history, culture, sportsmanship, volunteerism and friendship.
